Ensatina eschscholtzii of the family Plethodontidae is a terrestrial salamander that is widespread throughout California. Its range forms a ring around the great central valley. This species, like most terrestrial salamanders, feeds on insects. The individual you see here is capturing a waxmoth larva. Notice how it lunges forward with its whole body and lifts the waxworm from the substrate with its tongue. Ensatina has one of the fastest tongue projection speeds of any salamander, taking as little as 6 milliseconds. It is slowed down here to about 1/9 actual speed.
Below is an Ensatina capturing a termite. The movie plays at the same speed as the one above, and you can see how the termite feeding is much slower than the waxworm feeding.
