Pseudotriton ruber, the Red Salamander, is a hemidactyliine plethodontid, like Eurycea, and possesses a free projectile tongue that is protracted here in less than 11 milliseconds. This salamander usually lunges forward during prey capture, as during this capture of a cricket. The background grid is 1 cm (with a smaller 2 mm grid). This species is found in the eastern North America in springs and seeps, and can be seen roaming on rainy nights.
