Salamandrina terdigitata is found in Italy and is the only species in its genus. This tiny salamander, called the Spectacled Salamander, is bizarre in appearance as well as in its feeding. The tongue works with the same basic mechanism as that of Taricha, but the tongue pad is greatly elongated with a posterior flap. Salamandrina thus has an exceptionally long tongue compared to other members of the Salamandridae, and a reduced tendency to lunge forward during prey capture. Note the whip-like movement of the tongue in this movie of a cricket capture. Consecutive frames are separated by 7.5 milliseconds.
